Public Library Worker Guide

In our work with public libraries, we have found many who would like to make sure queer people are welcomed and find their resources useful. However, many people don't know where to start. Because of this, Book 28 Library are proud to have put together a free advice booklet for public library workers who would like to improve conditions for LGBTIQ+ people in their public library.

This is the advice of Book 28 in association with Colette Townend, Dr Elizabeth L. Chapman and Isadore Auerbach George. It is based partly on research and partly on our own experiences as queer librarians and library users. It is not meant to be authoritative, but rather a series of suggestions that serve as a starting point for progress. It is designed to be read modularly so feel free to skip to the section that addresses your current queries.

We plan to update our advice regularly along with emerging trends and feedback from earlier version. In this spirit, please feel free to leave any feedback in the comments below. We hope our tips and tricks may help you with common problems and give you a place to start. Ultimately, we cannot give any better advice than: proactively connect and work with your local queer community, and engage them in building a library that works best for them.
